Earth Day is on April 22nd – a day when people all around the world celebrate our Earth and advocate for the protection of people and planet.
Across the University of California system there are many events happening in the week leading up to Earth Day. See our compiled list of events here. If you know of other events going on on any of our campuses – please let us know!
The time is ripe to advocate for action to protect people and planet at the UC system. The UC is currently updating its climate action goals and their current draft only aims to achieve near-zero GHG emissions by 2045! The science is clear that we need to dramatically reduce emissions in the next decade if we are to have a chance of staying below the 1.5degC warming threshold – the UC needs to act now, not by 2045!
Feedback submissions on the draft UC Climate Protection Policy are open until April 7th 2023. See our submission guide here for inspiration.
The draft policy will go before the UC Sustainability Steering Committee on May 5th for approval. You can use events leading up to Earth Day as an opportunity to push the UC to aim high with its Climate Protection Policy and commit to treating the climate crisis with the urgency it deserves.
